The bond between Dharmaraja College and the beloved sport Rugby has been very strong for decades. According to history, Dharmaraja College has witnessed a deep-rooted rugby culture even before it was officially instated in the College in 1970s. This beloved game had to depart for a very short time from the college grounds due to a tragic death of a fellow student. However, Dharmaraja College managed to produce some of the most incredible rugby players that represented the Ceylon rugby team during those times. Colonel C.S.Fernando who represented the Ceylon athletic, football and rugby teams and the former DIG Daya Jayasundara who represented the Ceylon rugby team are living proof for such incredible talents produced.
In late 1960s, Lal Kumarasinghe who was a Master in Dharmaraja college at that time noticed how students led by Rohan Ekanayaka were playing with a rugby ball in school grounds. He identified the keen interest of students for the game and pioneered the initiation of rugby officially in school with the help of some senior students. Gamini Jayasundara is anointed as the first captain of the Dharmaraja rugby dynasty.
